I've noticed that a lot of new forum users appear to be porn related, and a lot of the site links appear to be to porn sites. Is this an issue? Do we need to clean off dodgy looking forum users?

This kind of attack is a well known issue.
We have already adapted a method for it - a second visual confirmation (on the first post of registered user). This keeps the forums clean from post coming from such attackers.
However
the registration of drug-porn-medic-gambling etc users cannot be avoided.
Last month I've deleted about 1200 inactive accounts from database...
But still need a good tool to block registration on machine based attacks, without making the new user registration too complicated
Any ideas?

Did it help? You should notice almost immediately. There is also a suggestion to apply the MOD that hides the Memberlist because that's why so many of the spammers show up (their website shows up on the memberlist). More here:

I'll try to use your second suggestion asap.
Thank you for your help anyway

Yes you are right grantb3 the registered users after the mod are not spammers. The Mod is great!grantb3 wrote:Looks good to me. All of the registered users since Mar 16 seem legit (at least they are not spamming). You could probably go ahead and purge anyone that has never posted on the board. There is another MOD (User List) that makes it quite an easy task.
Now the only thing is to remove the old spamming accounts and clear the database.
thanks a million
