What PCI Parallel card to choose
Hi all
This is my second new post. I have for the past month been having a complete nightmare trying to sort out the resorces with a PCI Parallel card. After getting a replacement and that was the same, I reside myself to the fact that no two cards do the same thing.
See this post if your interested:-
http://forums.lcdsmartie.org/viewtopic. ... sc&start=0
What I need from you lot is the name/model of a card or even the chipset on your card that you know work, with Lcd's, preferably eBay, as thats the easiest place for me to purchace it from, but I don't mine.
Thanks
Josh

If you don't specifically need the parallel port than I would suggest and USB adapter like the one in this post: http://forums.lcdsmartie.org/viewtopic.php?t=1540
You might put it up cheaper then a PCI parallel card and it will work in all windows versions!

Which one?
Hi thanks for that,
I had concidered USB before, but I was put off by the programing code, so I opted for what I thought was the easiest route, parallel.
So Ive been thru 2 parallel cards and over a month of head aches and still nothing.
Which brings me back to where I started. USB.
Ok so now I have found these two moduals:-
FTDI UM245R
DLP-USB232M
Which one is the better of the two as I havn't a clue?
I Found these on ebay, which one should I go for?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :IT&ih=007
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :IT&ih=015
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... otohosting
As for making a board from the schematics, I am lost on that too.
Some are two pots and an LCD, and others are a tonne of parts and a complicated wiring diagram, apart from that I do not have the facilities to make PCB's, yet. I'm still using strip board.
Also is there any where that I can find a beginners guide to coding?
Let me know if I am going bonkers?
Any advice is welcom.

The DLP-USB232M module will work in Nick's USB LCD circuit that caesar linked to. I don't know about the UM245R module since it uses a slightly different chip.
You can buy these modules direct from FTDI in their webshop which may be cheaper than getting them from the US - depends on shipping etc.
You can use either of these with ordinary veroboard/stripboard since the rest of the circuit is so simple. It's really only the LCD itself, plus a potentiometer to set the contrast and optionally another potentiomenter to set the backlight brightness.

Thanks for that,
But after a megga hunt thru the net I found this:-
http://www.harbaum.org/till/lcd2usb/index.shtml
what do you think?
I am getting really confused here, I own 5 Lcds, now and I can only get them to work on my email pc, not this one.
I do think USB is the way to go, I have just got to get my head around the concept. I though Parallel was a headach...lol

If you haven't done much microcontroller work before then stick with the DLP module circuit. The LCD2USB circuit is quite involved and requires you to program a microcontroller and possibly tweak the micro's code for larger LCDs with LED backlighting.
The disadvantage of the DLP module circuit is that (AFAIK) it's only supported in Smartie, so if you want to be able to use other software (can't think why
) you're stuck. On the other hand, it's about the simplest way to connect an LCD via USB.
Now for some further options... For a more universal LCD interface, look at the PIC Serial Backpack and Atmel Serial Backpack projects on this forum. These use a COM port (you can use a USB>Serial adapter) and also require microcontroller programming but are widely compatible. You can also buy kits to make similar backpacks (look at Seetron and maybe others). One drawback of these is that you need to find a 5V power source - this can be the PC's own PSU or an external regulated wall-wart brick.

I think I have made a dessision, although you have not had much experience with the FT245R, I saw this:-
http://pixca.net/2008/01/30/hd44780-ftdi-usb-lcd/
What do you think? it seems that if I add a couple of pots I can get it up and running fairly easily, yes? no?
Whats Bit-Bang though, Ive heard about it but with little referance to what it is.
So if I get a 245 & a couple of pots, what else other than smartie do i need? will smartie be the driver? or do I find it separatly?
This chap Lars has buit an lcd on the 245,
http://larsenglund.blogspot.com/2007/04 ... b-lcd.html
and he seems to be using the D2XX Driver from FTDI
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/D2XX.htm
So I assume that I build my kit, install 2.04.06 Driver, run smartie, hey presto we are up and running???
If I am right, can I run 2 Lcd 2x24 off the same 245 running one smartie with a 4x24 display (If possible) or will I have to buy two 245's? and run 2 smarties?
What do you think?
Am I completely mad?

Your first link uses the same wiring as Nick's and is mentioned in his forum post. That's your best bet for a simple LCD hookup.
To get this up and running, I think you need to install the D2xx driver package from FTDI and the FTDI Smartie driver from the Rapidshare link in Nick's forum post. Instructions in Nick's post. The hardware is pretty simple, although there isn't actually a circuit diagram for wiring the DLP module to the LCD. The schematic by whirleyes (same thread) uses a different module/pinout but you should be able to figure the wiring from the pin names.
Bit Bang just refers to the way the data is sent to the LCD, so you don't have to worry about it as a user. Look it up in Wikipedia for lots of info.

Hi there, thanks for the confidence boost.
Ive done it, I bought this:- UM245R USB-Parallel FIFO Development Module
It should be here in a week or so. The guy (Sergey) answered all my questions and filled me with hope
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :IT&ih=007.
I got a refund on the two parallel cards, so this at ?15.00 was a pound odd more expencive. What I would like to find out is a) can I have 2 displays with this modual and b) can I add buttons to it for display control and on / off?
Any ideas?
Other than that I think the driver and smartie install seams to be simple enough.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Actually you can't add buttons to it. But if you have a multimedia keyboard with lots of unused buttons, you can map them with the key plugin (key.dll) in the actions tab in smartie... very easy and no wires and buttons needed!
As for 2 lcd's I guess that it could be done, the usb module seems to have a spare pin, but it involves changing the driver by somebody.
Or the spare pin could be used for backlighting switch...

Yes you are correct, it's key by AKX the download link works in this topic also. http://forums.lcdsmartie.org/viewtopic.php?t=202
It's simple to wire two displays, just route the connections to both displays and the unused pin to the second display's Enable line.
The problem is with the driver, it doesn't support two controllers yet.
Just a reminder: the native 4x40 displays have to controller chips and use two enable lines, if you put up two displays then you have to route the usual connections to both displays and separately the two enable lines.

At the moment you cannot have 2 LCD modules on the same DLP module, but maybe (if the driver supports it - check with Nick) you could get 2 DLP modules and have 2 copies of Smartie running to give 2 completely independent displays of up to 4x20 each.
Nick suggests his driver can be changed to suit 4x40 LCDs, which are a bit like two 4x20 displays combined in terms of driver control, so it may be possible with some driver tweaking to run 2 4x20 LCDs on one DLP interface.

Wiring it up?
Hi
Ok the key.dll looks easy but the wiring, I read and re read whayou said, compaired it to this diagram,

I got lost trying to figure out what you ment by :-
As there are lots of unused pins would it be possible that you could you add the connections to this diagram for me, in mspaint or someting like that? I know its asking a lot, but thanks in advance.
There is a section in LCDSmartie FAQ web page http://lcdsmartie.sourceforge.net/FAQ.htm"My display isn't supported!" Would I be able to put a request there and hope and prey the guys see it and write a p[luin fo it? I had a quick scan of the request but I didnt see anyrthing usefull, unless I missed it?

Watch out for the pinout on your module - DLP, FTDI and other manufacturers have different pinouts on their versions of the adapter board. Download the datasheet for the exact board you have from FTDI to double check, and relate the pins to the schematic by their names.
What caesar means about the 4x40 and dual-4x20 displays is that the 4x40 LCD has 2 enable signals, one for each of the 2 controller on the module. To connect two 4x20 displays, you'd need to wire the 2 modules in parallel (D4-7, RS, R/W, Vcc and Gnd) except for the Enable signal, which has to be connected separately for each module. Each module should also have its own contrast and brightness resistors.
HOWEVER, the driver doesn't (yet) support dual displays like this, so just wire up a single 4x20 or whatever you have for starters. Get that working and then start looking at multiple displays. I'm not even sure if you can have 2 FTDI adapter modules connected to the PC at the same time - the driver might get confused.

It works
Hi all
Right I have had a heck of a working week, sorry for not replying.
Ok did it work?
Yes it did, when I put the FTDI_LCD.dll & .ini files in the dispaly folder. Restarted smartie, hey presto a working display. Thank you all and that includes Sergey, the guy in Russia??? that I bought it from on eBay.
2 days tops to get it running, how long have I been friggin around with parallel? too long and it only cost ?2. odd more than a parallel card too, the connections are simpler too.
Now this is where a new set of problem arrises, firstly I wanted an external display so that I could see my CPU & GPU temps and speeds whilst benchmarking as it is neigh on impossible to see them when running these programs.
So I need the plugin for SpeedFan and ATItools, which I downloaded, plonked in the plugin folder, but nothing.
I am running both programs and I have re-started smartie, what am I doing wrong?
In the smartie setups, in LCD Features, there is FanSpeed(1,1)(nr,divider)???
All that does is put that exact phrase on screen and nout else, what ever combinations, I chose, it makes no differance.
As for Atitool, it just says atitool not running, when it clearly is.
I know that I am new to this side of Pc'ing, but I am willing to learn, so any help will be warmly welcomed
Yours

Glad you sorted it out and that it works!
Now, LCDSmartie uses so called "functions" to display data and basically you use them like this:
$dll(plugin,n,n,n)
which for speedfan makes the following statement to fetch the first temperature in speedfan:
$dll(speedfan,2,1,0)
speedfan is the name of the plugin, 2 stands for the second tab, temperatures and 0 means do not show any decimal places.
The first tab in speedfan are fans, then temeratures, then voltages.
So taking this into account, to show the first voltage with 2 decimal places after the comma you would write in Smartie:
$dll(speedfan,3,1,2)
Hope this clears everything up!
LE: All plugins have readme's that explain the functions they provide

Hi there caesar
Thanks for that, I thought I was going mad.
Ok I sussed it out, Atitools wasn?t working properly, so I downloaded v27, beta 4, and every thing sprang to life.
So I now have CPU Speed, %, temps on all 4 cores, and on the next line Gpu speeds, temps.
So thanks again.
I can get atitool.dll working, but I am unable to get atitraytools.dll to work at all, it displays "0"
This is link for this it http://forums.lcdsmartie.org/viewtopic.php?t=87
atitool.dll doesn't have a fan speed monitor, whereas atitraytools.dll does, hence I would like to use it.
So I wrote in " $dll(atitraytools,0,0,0) and went from there. I know I am doing sone thing wrong, but what?
I have tried removing all the other Plugins, and still nout, I'm new to this and I tried to apply what you said with speedfan, but I don?t really know, still a long road ahead
Next problem that I worked around was the demo. I ended up editing the config file and deleting all references to it, as I couldn?t seem to get rid of it.
I do not know if that was the correct way, but I couldn?t find any other, so was I right? If I am it seems a bit weird that that?s the only way to stop it.
One other thing, when I turn my Pc off the display is still powered, how do I shut down power to it? I have hunted thru the bios and I can?t seem to see any thing relevant, so can Smartie control it?
Now all I need to do is add another display to this module and we are done, I have nearly finished the CAD work for my new Rig and hopeing to get it CNC'd within the next two weeks, its has two of these displays in it, so if I cant figure out how to wire it up then Ill just have to buy another module I suppose, can two instances of smartie read two different devices?
Speak with you soon and thanks again.
Josh

Try $dll(atitraytools,1,0,0) or $dll(atitraytools,1,,)
then change the 1 with numbers from 1 to 10.
What demo are you talking about?
You must disable in the BIOS something that allows the USB to turn on the computer or to bring it out of standby, then it will cut power to the display.
The can be two instances of Smartie with different config files but I don't know if there can be two FTDI modules in one computer...
then change the 1 with numbers from 1 to 10.
What demo are you talking about?

Yup I did all that and got nothing and I went all the way from 0,0,0 to infernitum, till I got really board, I think it was 30 odd minutes, but nothing.
As for the demo, every time I started the smartie, after about a minute or so whatever I had on the screen lets say a clock and some temps, the screen would scroll past, with bbc rss feeds, local temps, and other unwanted stuff so I deleted it out of the config file and I have had no problems since.
I still am unable to find out how to turn the USB off in my Asus bios.
In USB CONFIGURATION I have these options
USB FUNCTIONS E/D SET TO E
USB 2.0 CONTROLER E/D SET TO E
USB 2.0 CONTROLER mode HI/ NORM SET TO HI
BIOS EHCI HAND OFF E/D SET TO E
PORT 64/60 EMULATION E/D SET TO D
LEGACY USB SUPPORT AUTO/E/D SET TO AUTO
Other than that all I can turn off is the LCD Poster, which I havnt as it displays the time when turned off but without the backlight.
According to the guy that sold me the FTDI I can have lots of them running on the same pc, what I do not know and sure is possible is how to wire up two lcd's to one FTDI.
Any ideas?
Josh

Then it means that atitray doesn't work...
As for the demo, disabling from smartie the other screens would have also solved it. You have an enable screen checkbox on every one of the possible 20 screens. that are cycled.
In the BIOS try to look in the power management tab, but as I recall, the new motherboards always power up the usb ports...
I can't kill power to usb either.
You could ask the display plugin developer for support for either a transistor to controll backlight or support for a second display (the FTDI module has only one spare pin to work with).
