I just bought a 4x20 lcd hd44870 and a controller interface. I have soldered those together. My next step is to connect it to the computer. I have found a lot on how to wire through the parallel port but nothing is really clear on how to use the serial rs232 port. I think I have to wire it to the power supply as well but am not sure. If someone could clarify that would be great. Thanks
P.S. I am trying to build this: www.popsci.com/streamer

If you got the LCD/controller and level shifter boards specified then the wiring should be simple.
The LCD controller's RX terminal connects to the level shifter's TX terminal. The ground connections all tie together and connect to a black wire on the power supply (connect to a spare drive power plug). The Vcc (+5V) terminals on both boards connect to one of the power supply's red wires (5V).
You'll need the SparkFun driver for LCD Smartie - download from http://forums.lcdsmartie.org/viewtopic.php?t=1429
You'll find plenty of info in this forum about displaying Winamp info on the LCD once you get it up and running.
