Trouble after install SP 3 (XP Home)

Post by Haloo »

After installing SP 3, the LCD (2x16) connected to my pc does't work well. a) Typing two lines in Smartie results in displaying only the lower line on both lines of the LCD.
b) Only the lower line in Smartie gives the same results.
c) The upper line gives on the LCD also a upper line.
Connecting the LCD on my laptop with XP Home and only SP 2 does't give trouble. What can I do to solve this problem?

What type of LCD (make/model) do you have, and how is it connected to the PC (serial, parallel, USB...)? Was it working correctly before SP3?

The system worked fine till the moment that SP 3 was installed. Hereafter all I know about the USB-LCD kit:

-Artikel: USB-LCD 16*2 White carr. Blue Backlight
-Controller: Power supply+ USB interface
-Brand: HTvision
-Controller: HD44780 compatible
-Dimensions module: 80*38*38 mm
-Power supply: 5 Volt via USB
See also the site of the vendor:

Looks more like a configuration error, is crystal.dll selected as output driver?
Do your settings look like this?

Yes, I have the same settings. I also tried an older version (5.3.1.16) and it gives the same result: a 'one-liner'. I think about to format C and reinstall XP without SP3 ! !

Then there must be something disturbing the communication.
Will try to reproduce your problem on a XP SP3 machine. I am really curious what's the cause.

Anybody using XP SP3 and Smartie?

I'm using XP Pro and SP3 with Smartie 5.4 in one of my PCs.
The LCD Display in this machine is this one.
It has a parallel interface.

Display plugin: HD44780.dll
Parameters: LPT1

And is running fine on XPSP3... but it was installed when the machine was uptade to SP3 already.

A suggestion: Maybe the SP3 instalation, has overwritten one (or more) file(s) used by the LPT-USB interface with another version (probably a runtime DLL). If it's the case a resintallation attempt of the original files will be noticed by the file protection system (if active) and display a warning!. This may lead to a clue about what happen with the SP3 installation.

And, finally...there are another updates post SP3... including 'fixes' for malicious soft removal... maybe one of them can be the problem.

Best regards.

I'm running Smartie 5.4.1 thru the Matrix Orbital driver and serial port on XP 32bit SP3 with no problems. I installed SP3 using the full network-admin package recently (and several auto-updates since), and there's no apparent change in Smartie's operation since installing.

We are a few months older now! And my Smartie is working properly. What I have done? Format C and reinstalled XP without SP3. Much work, but I'am happy now.
