hd44780 screen change problem

I have a 1X16 HD44780 that uses alternative row addressing (addresses are mapped as a 2X8).
I am having a hard time with multiple screens. I only have two screens enabled, no transistions, on a 10 sec cycle. The sample window shows the screens rotating properly, but my display seems stuck on screen 1. The funny thing is, you can see it display try to display the second screen for maybe 1/10 of a second, but then it just defaults back to screen 1 again.

This is a big deal for me since my display is so small - I would really like to be able to display more information but right now I am quite limited (16 characters is tight)...

Can anyone help?
