Hello gentlemen. Its been a few years since Ive been on site. Here's a question; would it be possible to take a cpld(altera) and re-create the chip logic of the hitachi and create a large alphanumeric led based display that could be controlled by smartie?
Maybe it would be possible to use the hitachi chip itself and build the led matrix around it? A 16 character 5X7 matrix screen would have 560 leds. Any ideas or projects along these lines please share.
Thank you

Re: Large HD 44780 display
The best successful try to drive LED display using custom hardware can be found here http://www.harbaum.org/till/ledmatrix/
There are few more solutions published on the net (http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-giant-LED-sign/)
From my point of view it depends on the hardware knowledge.
Good luck!
