Wiki for plugins!?
Is it not a good idea to start a wiki for the plugins so all plugins could be posted at one single place?
And also have the documentation for each plugin at one single page..

Re: Wiki for plugins!?
I have to agree with erlis. The plugins are currently dotted around the place a bit. Some are linked off the LCDSmartie site, others are only posted on links in these forums, we need a single repositry.erlis wrote:Is it not a good idea to start a wiki for the plugins so all plugins could be posted at one single place?

Ideally, I'd like to see an regularly updated page on the main LCDSmartie site for plugins and their docs. A Wiki, or an admin controlled 'forum' would still get the job done though.

I have started a wiki for plugins, please upload and post info about your plugins here: http://lcdsmartie.erlis.se
I'm going to update info about my own plugins next week.

Are you going to add all the other plugins avaliable?erlis wrote:I have started a wiki for plugins, please upload and post info about your plugins here: http://lcdsmartie.erlis.se

There are some on the sourceforge page like menu.dll, some in these forums and some on the LCD SMartie site.
I think the addition of screen photos would be good for most plugins.

Well it's a wiki, everyone can post plugins to my site, and everyone can add pictures/screen dumps if they whant to. (My intention is that the plugin author post his plugin to my site.)
I think a central site for all plugins is in everybodys interest.
Example of description of my itunes2 plugin: http://lcdsmartie.erlis.se/index.php/ITunes2

I would like to see something like this on the main lcd smartie website.

I'm with you on this J

@erlis
I realy love the complete plugin list and wiki idea. But another LCD Smartie site?
The end user will be confused... besides this is not a pro look for the program.

wa yesterday I work til 1:30 AM to restore the old plugins. For now, this site is dedicated for my plugins but if everyone are willing to contribute I won't mind making a "wiki"-like website for all the lcdsmartie related files/info. What do you think?

I have just a standard installation of MediaWiki, i.e. every user can post. It's possible to protect sites so only administrators can edit. It even seems to be possible to set up MediaWiki to have different user classes._X7JAY7X_ wrote:I agree that a wiki would be great but how do you have it set up?

Why do you think the wiki will be more abused than a forum like this?
IFR: The major feature missing on your site is that you don't have any good way to provide documentation online.
limbo: Well, at my point, the most confusing parts for LCDsmartie users is where to find the plugins and a breif description of the plugin. Therefore i think my wiki idea is pretty good, everyone can post description/documentation and the user know where to go to find plugins. However, if the plugins page at the main LCDsmartie site could have the same approach I'm very happy. For example, a new LCD smartie user arriving at your site (no complaind about that..), how can she (or he) know what exactly the FX plugin does?
Let's hope i didn't affend someone now

I support the idea of a central resource/repository for plugins. Can a wiki (or similar user-updateable) system be added to the LCDSmartie sourceforge/official site? That way, the plugins will be available at least at long as the main Smartie project is going, and everthing is in the same place.
Currently, you have to search/trawl around the forum and various user sites to find the plugin downloads and any associated documentation.
There's always the risk that a wiki will be abused, but this doesn't seem to be an issue on the forums, and hopefully only sensible, like-minded electronics/PC experimenters will be contributing to the wiki.
All general plugin support type questions should be kept to the forum. The wiki could be for plugins, their formal documentation and users' useful tips. There are quite a few plugin tips dotted around the forums that could be merged into the wiki.
We'll end up duplicating some info, but hopefully it will be more accessible and organised - info on forums tends to get buried in threads.
I'm also not very familiar with wiki operation, so I'm going to play around with erlis's wiki...
PS erlis, you might want to resize the LCDSmatrie logo on your wiki page (at the top left) so it fits in the navigation bar space - looks like 135px wide.
Matt.

All files have to be released using CVS according to Sourceforge. This means that a wiki would not be possible on the main site (as far as I know unless someone has an idea). I talked to clansley about adding it to the forums but the disk space and bandwidth are already stretched. The only option is to host it off this site using a 3rd site for LCD smartie, the main page, the forums, and the wiki. It would have to be a site that would never go down. I dont have any good ideas unless someone else does?
The forums are abused occasionally. I sometimes, and probably limbo, have to delete posts that have irrelevant information about smartie. Most contain a bunch of links to "other" sites. I could see a wiki being abused, but not that often.

I'm happy to provide the wiki and I'll try to moderate the contence as good as I can.
The mashine the wiki is running on now is my own private mashine, however I think it's pretty stable (last uptime 150 days, and now I'm even using an UPS to provide power to it) so hopefully there will not be any big downtimes, maybe we can mirror the data to IFR's site to provide even better stability..
Please advertise my site if you like it or talk to me if there is any approvments that needs to be done..
