On parallel connection the module have a potentiometer for this function (contrast). This applies to LCDs.
It should be there on VFD as well.

Is this the LCD? http://www.tinsharp.com/en/products.php ... class[0]=7 (first item on page).

Did you get an LCD and wire it yourself, or was it a pre-assembled product with connector etc ready to plug in (like this: http://www.watercoolingshop.com/catalog ... cts_id=348 )

I don't think Smartie can control the backlight brightness in software. It can turn the light on or off if you use the circuit on the Smartie schematics page, but the ready-made kits I've seen don't include this.

If it's a ready-made one, it's probably fixed at maximum brightness (and the contrast may be preset too). You have to fiddle about modifying it to change brightness. You can add a potentiometer to manually vary the brightness a bit - this is also shown on the Smartie schematics page at http://lcdsmartie.sourceforge.net/circuits.htm
