There's no way for Smartie to display anything while the system is booting, and probably no way for any other software (except maybe core drivers) to control the LCD either.
The only real solution (as far as I know) is to use a microcontroller to control the LCD (like Matrix Orbital, CrystalFontz and home-made controllers) to display a message on the LCD as soon as it is powered up (ideally from the PC power supply). You can display a preset message (like "Pasan's Media PC booting...") during boot and, after the system is booted up, Smartie starts and displays whatever media/system info you want.
