Laptop/LCD in my car

Post by capt. chicken »

I have a laptop that I want to be able to connect to an LCD (something like a 20X4) in my car. I want to be able to hook my laptop up and play my music. I was wondering if I could hook up the LCD using usb because I don't have a Parallel port on the machine. I was thinking about these products wired together...

LCD Screen
USB to Parallel

Would this work and if it can, what program would I use to run it.

If this wouldn't work or you think there is a better way, then please post.
Thanks!

This is where I got the idea...

Some folks on this forum have tried USB>Parallel adapter cables, but without any luck AFAIK. The LCD connections used by Smartie (see here) differ slightly from the Mac LCD Hack-a-day article - there are several "standard" connection schemes.

It's possible that the connections Smartie uses aren't properly implemented in USB>Parallel adapters, or that some adapters are better than others... so it's a bit of a suck-it-and-see situation unfortunately.

There are several other LCD control programs for Windows, but I only have experience with Smartie - see http://www.modding.cygad.net/uk/list/621/1.htm or do a web search.

These USB to parallel adapters are not support a new (virtual) parallel port.
They are addind only printing support devices to the system.
So its not possible to connect an LCD on this device.

Go to hardware section and find a serial back-pack AVR or PIC based in order to use the laptop only if there is a com port present to your system
