Another newb here.
Is it possible to add actions that respond to a keyboard button press such as pressing the Numpad 1 key on the keyboard?

There are a couple of hotkey plugins that might do the trick for you:

I haven't used either of these, so read the posts and experiment. I think you can use them with the extra multimedia keys or normal key combinations.
Depending on what sort of LCD you have and how it's connected, it may be possible to add buttons to the LCD unit. There's also a plugin to read up to 16 buttons connected to a parallel port here: http://forums.lcdsmartie.org/viewtopic.php?t=876
