i'm not a specialist on this.. but the same thing happened to me after i was using a different software which didnt shut down correctly..
Try to clean reboot and run lcdsmartie.. and if already done.. maybe your LCD isnt attached properly and some data is misinterpreted?

Lots of causes for this...

1.Wrong cabling (Most times)
2.Wrong driver (HD44780 is the correct)
2a.Hardware error (Rare) 2b.Burned LCD (I don't think so)
3.Incompatible LCD (Extremely rare)

My suggestion: check again cables and drivers.

the cable that came with it only goes 1 way in to the lcd screen and has a printer port conector on the other side it is on ebay made by pcidea just plug it in and get software thats what it said unless the cable is faulty?

Please provide more info about seller and LCD cabling and connection.

I insist that there must be something on the cabling (maybe I'm wrong).
Until I have enough info to verify the correct cabling I can't be sure for an ebay seller.

Did he provided more info to you?
Did he suggested a program?
Can he answer, or give you a schematic diagram?

Please use LPT1,5 as display startup parameter instead of the simple LPT1 and report back.

It could also be that the cable is too long and the signals from you parallel port card are not strong enough.

If you can, test the LCD on another computer with integrated parallel port so that you will know if it's the LCD/cable or your card that has problems.
