New to this

Hey I am trying to do my first ever LCD. I went of this site here http://electrosofts.com/parallel/lcd.html the LCD Im using is a 16x2 that uses the HD44780. When I plug it in it does what the site saids and show that bars going across but I can't get LCD smartie to make it do anything. What am I missing here? Im running XP.

I did but it doesn't make sense really . It has two different program and i'm not sure what to do with them
