This is not supported for the moment. Theoretically speaking this can be done using a custom plugin but I'm not aware of facebook plugin for LCD Smartie.

Maybe an idea

if your explorer opens with face book does the tabs show how many new messages there are

something to work with IE without IE to start

I didn't find any but I can code one. Will take some time because Facebook's authentication system is cumbersome.

Give me some ideas of what data would be useful to display.

something I've previously written here above
with out starting internet explorerer still see how many messages you have on FB
you can see somthing like that with IE 9 in about:tabs
and maby howe many people ar on line
